This is not your typical Café – It’s the Hottest Malaysian Maid Café

It’s interesting being served by waitresses dressed in adorable attractive anime-like maid costumes for a change.
We then realized that maid cafés are cosplay restaurants where their staff play the role of housekeepers who treat patrons as their masters (and mistresses) instead of just typical café customers. This directly takes the expression ‘customer is king’ to a distinct level!
Hottest Malaysian Maid Cafe came to life. Thanks to the subculute coined initially in Japan. It has extended globally and is slowly achieving popularity in the Malaysian ACG (Anime, Comic, Games) population.
“I think it’s due to the services. Our masters get a lot of attention from the cute maids who serve them,” according to Angel Halloween Chooi, a 22-year-old maid.
Moreover, customers have a more personal interaction with the maids through exchanges and games. It’s an entirely different, however memorable makan experience!
Angel, who is initially based in Puchong, is currently a full-time kindergarten teacher following her degree in Early Childhood Education.
During her available time, she works as a makeup artist and model and runs her own maid café, Her Majesty’s Mansion.
She has been in the Malaysian ACG community since 2011, but her genuine interest in cosplay started around 2014.
“It all began with my fondness for makeup and fashion. When I got into the ACG society, I instantly fell in love with the colors and liveliness of the community to bring their favorite characters and visions to life.”
“In the beginning, I cosplayed as Ciel Phantomhive from Black Butler. It was for an appointment for Author’s Day when I was studying in SEGi College Subang Jaya.”
From then on, Angel has cosplayed at least 10 distinct anime characters.
In 2015, Angel energetically got interested in the maid café scene, joining Comic Fiesta first as a recruit for their maid café, La Petite Fox (LPF).
Here is where she swears that being a maid is different from cosplaying.
“It’s no anymore acting when I dress up. It’s not just wearing a costume with hair and makeup to role play as a character; I am merely me.”
“I like to get into a custom; it doesn’t even have to be an event or a notable occasion; I just do it because I feel like it. The way I dress mirrors my daily mood.”
Angel also cited that it is not necessary to build a persona when one performs as a maid. The person simply has to be their fine self.
“All customers have a distinct ‘type’ that they like, but it’s not up to us to satisfy everyone,” she adds.
Excitingly, Angel initially found it uncomfortable calling customers masters, but she got used to it after a while.
“Calling our customers’ masters’ is one of the things we rehearse during our training sessions,” she clarifies, citing that it requires long hours of training to be a flawless maid.
Around the same year, she was upgraded to a head maid role after training and had been active in all LPF events for 2015 and 2016. She had also entered other maid cafés for anime events in other parts of Malaysia.
“Being a maid is a career to me; it is a profession. I don’t consider it cosplay anymore. I see the outfits as uniforms and not costumes.”
“As a maid, you must be on your best behavior and always have the best customer service game on while smiling for the entire day and interacting with patrons.”
“In a café, even when your closest friends visit, you have to stay adept and treat them as your masters,” she discloses, counting that the hours being in costume is longer.
Angel’s most challenging experience is keeping up with all her close friends and fan base.
“I am bad at recalling names and faces, and I could sometimes be introverted. I seldom start contact with people in the community, but it’s an essential ‘skill’ to ‘stay appropriate in the community.”
One of the most unforgettable memories she experienced was when one of her ‘Masters’ admitted his feelings to her.
“It was during the second year I worked at Comic Fiesta. He said he ‘felt something for me since I spoon-fed him the previous year. He even performed magic tricks for me after confessing.”
Angel believes 2017 to be the year her maid career really took off. In May this year, the online ACG media platform MAGIC RAIN approached Angel to help create and conduct a maid café for their event.
She took this chance to build her own maid café, Her Majesty’s Mansion, and ran their first event, Secret Garden, with MAGIC RAIN. Within a few months, Her Majesty’s Mansion has successfully conducted and collaborated in a total of 3 events.
“Her Majesty’s Mansion is an event-based maid and butler café. We create events with additional amenities and themes to fit the event. We attempt to spread quality maid café experiences in Malaysia,” Angel explains.
She’s looking forward to one day operating her own maid café at an established place.
“I would like to maintain the maid culture as lively as feasible in Malaysia since I can see how delighted our masters are to see us every time they come home.”
